A tie is never machine washed or ironed: it is cleaned flat with a cloth dampened with water and a little ammonia, then smoothed with the jet of a steam iron or rolled around a bottle of very hot water. At Swann, a Paris house of made-to-measure clothing, we detail below how to clean, wash and smooth your ties, in silk as in wool.
Place the tie fully flat on a hard, flat surface, then pass a clean, damp cloth with a little added ammonia, over the entire length of the tie. As soon as the cloth becomes dirty, replace it. When the tie is clean, pass over it with the jet from a steam iron. If you don’t have access to a steam iron, lightly dampen the back of the tie with a little water, then put some very hot water in a bottle, roll the tie around the bottle and leave it there for a few moments.
Some silk ties can be washed. To wash them in complete safety, follow the instructions printed on the label and put a little sugar in the water used for the final rinse to add a finishing touch.
Save your ties from stains!
Spray them with Texguard or a similar anti-staining agent. On silk, like wool, all you have to do is damp them down with a towel soaked in mineral water to achieve flawless results.
