How to measure your neck

Your neck is measured with your head straight and looking ahead, placing the tape measure just below the Adam's apple, with one finger slipped between the neck and the tape. For a 39 cm neck, the collar of the finished shirt will measure 40 cm, one centimetre of ease being added when the shirt is made. At Swann, a Parisian made-to-measure shirt house, we show you how to take it on video.

How to take the measurement

One of the essential steps in getting the right measurements for your men's shirt is taking your neck measurement.

Measure your neck by positioning the tape measure just below the Adam's apple. Keep one finger between your neck and the tape. If your neck measures 39 cm, the collar of the finished shirt will measure 39 + 1 cm, that is 40 cm, to give you the ease you need.

Tips

A few more pointers to get it right

  • Do not add an extra centimetre to allow for shrinkage. We take it into account when cutting the fabric
  • Take care to keep a natural posture in your neck and chin. Do not lift your head, look straight ahead.

Frequently asked questions about the neck measurement

Where should the tape measure go to measure the neck?

Just below the Adam's apple, at the base of the neck, with one finger slipped between the neck and the tape measure.

What collar size for a 39 cm neck?

A 40 cm collar. The collar of the finished shirt measures the neck plus 1 cm, to leave the ease needed.

Should I add extra centimetres to allow for shrinkage in the wash?

No. Swann allows for it when cutting the fabric. Give your actual measurement, with no margin.

What posture should I adopt to measure my neck?

A natural posture of the neck and chin, head straight, looking straight ahead. Lifting your head distorts the measurement.

How can I tell if a shirt collar is the right size?

Once buttoned, the collar should leave no gap around the neck but remain comfortable enough to slip two fingers in easily.
