In 1823, a Scottish chemist by the name of Charles Macintosh invented the first modern raincoat cut from canvas coated with liquefied rubber. Its simple, elegant shape, inspired by the "car coat", and its effectiveness made it a success, and the raincoat has never gone out of fashion since.
