Navy Corduroy Suit

Navy Corduroy Suit

Ref:COBMT1986AH26

Two-button single-breasted suit in navy cotton corduroy. Unstructured construction, natural shoulders with no padding, straight flap pockets, a single back vent and full lining. Trousers with belt loops, a single reverse pleat and a plain hem.

The English call it corduroy. Some have long claimed the name comes from the French corde du roi, the king’s, cord supposedly a reference to a fabric once worn at the French court. A pleasing royal origin story for a cloth born of a far more modest tradition.

By the nineteenth century, corduroy had become serious business in the mills of northern England. It was woven to last, not to impress. In the valleys of Lancashire and Yorkshire, generations of workers handled cotton, refined their looms and passed down a craft that remains very much alive today.

It dressed workshop labourers, country squires, university professors and a few nonconformists in the 1970s. From that history, it retains a certain freedom.

Its texture, its softness, the way it catches the light, all give a suit a character of its own. Less formal than conventional wool, yet every bit as elegant, corduroy softens and develops a patina over the years. It is remarkably easy to wear, with a tie or simply with a knitted sweater.
