The quality of a beige overcoat begins with its fabric: camel hair — iconic and rare.
The first camel-hair cloths appeared in the United Kingdom at the end of the 19th century, when several English mills began experimenting with this fibre, collected during the animal’s natural moulting season. It was used for outdoor coats, blankets, and travel garments — pieces designed for protection.
In the interwar period, the material gained prestige.
It equipped certain military coats and gave rise to the first polo coats, worn by players between matches: long, double-breasted, naturally beige. It was the first time camel hair truly entered the realm of refined civilian dress.
After the war, the beige double-breasted coat took its place in the city.
American academics and businessmen adopted this warm yet lightweight piece — serious yet relaxed — whose appeal stems as much from its cut as from the fibre itself. The camel coat thus became a classic of the masculine wardrobe.
